How do we identify a neighbor or neighborhood in our current age of migration and mobility? Examining the religious, political, and cultural implications of “the neighbor” in the German-speaking world, this interdisciplinary conference seeks to enrich our understanding of not only genocide and violence but also exchange, aid, and co-operation.

Unter dem Titel „Transit Deutschland: Debatten zu Nation und Migration“ erscheint eine erweiterte und aktualisierte deutsche Fassung von „Germany in Transit: Nation and Migration, 1955 – 2005“ bei der Konstanz University Press im März 2011.
2010 Kudos!
Two former research assistants in the Multicultural Germany Project were offered tenure-track positions in 2010: David Gramling (Berkeley, 2008) is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Priscilla Layne (Berkeley, 2011) will be Assistant Professor of German at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
2008 Susan Sontag Prize for Translation
In 2008, research assistants Kristin Dickinson, Robin Ellis and Priscilla Layne won the Susan Sontag Prize for Translation for their collaborative translation from German into English of “Koppstoff: Kanaka Sprak vom Rande der Gesellschaft” by Feridun Zaimoğlu. The book presents the fictionalized voices of 26 Turkish women living in Germany.
