Fatih Akin’s Soul Kitchen
Unlike Head On and The Edge of Heaven, Fatih Akin’s most recent film Soul Kitchen is a comedy. The film focuses on Zinos, a restaurant owner who is forced to employ a drunken chef played by Head On‘s Birol Unel. The chef insists on cooking “real” food, and while this appeals to Zinos he loses his customers to fast food joints.
While the writer of this article, summarizes the movie as a film “about food as a bond between families, friends, and communities,” she doesn’t elaborate how the film does this. Nevertheless, it is an interesting idea whether food can form the grounds for communication between cultures. In the news, the doner kebab has been proclaimed Germany’s new favorite snack. Has this increased interaction between Germans and Turkish minorities? Perhaps this film investigates this.
