Turkey to join the EU?
The discussion of Turkey being included into the EU has generated varying viewpoints about the issue. Proponents of the idea contend that the inclusion of Turkey into the EU would help to restructure and stabilize the country. They also contend that the inclusion of Turkey guarantees the EU a link to Middle Eastern diplomatic efforts, as well as a safe transport route of goods into the middle east. Opponents argue that Turkey’s historic disregard for human rights and dissolution of Christianity presents problems for other EU countries.
From an outsiders point of view, I believe that much of the adverse sentiment expressed is centered on cultural misunderstandings and racial tensions. Germany especially voices their distaste for inclusion, most likely because of their position of being a receiving country for a large number of Turkish migrants.
