Remaking the European City: Amsterdam, Globalization, and Street Art

This presentation is about art, globalization, and urban counterculture in 21st-century Europe. Focusing on Amsterdam, but also addressing parallels with London, Paris, and Berlin, the discussion will analyze street art and urban renewal initiatives in order to understand the role of creative practice in neoliberal globalization and inter-European city profiling. In particular, the presentation will explore what happens when art in public spaces strategically decelerates, disrupts, re-routes, or even stops movement, flow, and interaction in the global city in efforts to refocus attention on issues of place, community, and belonging.

Christoph Lindner is professor of media and culture and director of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at the University of Amsterdam, where he writes about cities, visual culture, and globalization. He is currently a visiting professor at New York University and a research affiliate at the University of London Institute in Paris. His books include Paris-Amsterdam Underground (Amsterdam/Chicago UP, 2013), Globalization, Violence, and the Visual Culture of Cities (Routledge, 2010), and Urban Space and Cityscapes (Routledge, 2006).
