Weltstadt — Erinnerung und Zukunft von Geflüchteten im Modell

WELTSTADT — Erinnerung und Zukunft von Geflüchteten im Modell (WORLD CITY: Refugees’ Memories and Futures as Models)

About the Project:

From September 2016 to March 2017, S27 – Art and Education held eight xed and mobile model-making workshops in different Berlin districts as well as in Genshagen (Brandenburg). The residents of nearby refugee homes and pupils from a “welcome class” (a German language class for refugees) attended the workshops to make their own personal remembrance sites and blueprints for the future based on photos they had on their phones and images they found on the internet and in books and magazines. From May 12th to June 5th, 2017, WELTSTADT (WORLD CITY) was exhibited in Agora Rollberg, Berlin-Neukölln for the first time.
S27 – Art and Education then realized that WELTSTADT needed to go on the road, to get out of central Berlin and out into the suburbs and wider reaches of the country. In 2018, S27 therefore took the project to Görlitz and Spandau, where the concept was expanded and construction continued. From October 1st-October 3rd, 2018, the exhibition appeared back in central Berlin during the Day of German Unity festival (Fest zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit). The exhibition gathered together, under the cover of a bumper car arena, the many different broken pieces and fresh starts that make up our modelmakers’ visions – refugees and locals alike, from Berlin, Spandau and Görlitz. 150 model houses were made in total, but only a select few will be shown in the reproduction below.

Editor’s Note: We invite you to read Deniz Göktürk’s companion short essay “Modeling a World City” for a critical analysis of this project.
